My father’s family name is Pirrip, and my first name Philip, but as a child I couldn’t say either. So, I called myself Pip, and then so did everyone else.

English Summary
Pip is a young orphan boy whose parents are dead. He lives with his sister and her husband, Joe Gargery, the blacksmith, in a marshy village near the river, a few miles from the sea. One cold and sad day, while Pip is standing alone in the churchyard and looking at his parents’ graves, a frightening man suddenly appears. This man is an escaped convict, dirty, chained and desperate. He threatens Pip and forces him to bring a file to cut the iron from his leg and some food from home. Out of fear for his life, Pip promises to help the man and is finally released. Shaken and terrified, Pip goes home, remembering the man’s threats and the mention of a mysterious young companion.
