  • Exercise -11.3 Q.7

    Problem

A circular portion is to be cut from the square carpet of area 4900 m². Find the radius and area of the largest circular portion possible from the carpet.

    Solution

Step 1: Finding the side length of the square

    Given that the area of the square carpet is 4900 m², we can find the side length by taking the square root: $$\text{Area of square} = \text{side}^2 = 4900 \text{ m}^2$$ $$\text{Side length} = \sqrt{4900} = 70 \text{ m}$$

Step 2: Determining the radius of the largest circle

The largest circle that can be cut from a square is inscribed in the square, touching all four sides. Therefore, the diameter of the circle equals the side length of the square. $$\text{Diameter of circle} = \text{Side of square} = 70 \text{ m}$$ $$\text{Radius} = \frac{\text{Diameter}}{2} = \frac{70}{2} = 35 \text{ m}$$

Step 3: Calculating the area of the circle

    Using the formula for the area of a circle: $$\text{Area} = \pi r^2$$ $$\text{Area} = \pi \times (35)^2 = \pi \times 1225 = 1225\pi \text{ m}^2$$ $$\text{Area} \approx 3.14159 \times 1225 \approx 3846.15 \text{ m}^2$$

    Answer

    • Radius of the largest circular portion: 35 m
    • Area of the circular portion: \(1225\pi\) m² or approximately 3846.15 m²

  • Ch.13 Poor Cinderella

Poor Cinderella, whose stepmom was mean,

could never see films rated PG-13.

    गरीब सिंड्रेला, जिसकी सौतेली माँ बहुत कठोर थी,

    PG-13 रेटिंग वाली फ़िल्में वह कभी नहीं देख सकती थी।

She hadn’t a cell phone and no DVD,

no notebook computer or pocket TV.

    उसके पास न मोबाइल फोन था, न कोई DVD,

    न नोटबुक कंप्यूटर था, न ही पॉकेट TV।

She wasn’t allowed to play video games.

The tags on her clothes had unfashionable names.

    उसे वीडियो गेम खेलने की भी अनुमति नहीं थी।

    उसके कपड़ों पर लगे टैग बिल्कुल भी फ़ैशनेबल नहीं थे।

Her shoes were not trendy enough to be cool.

No limousine chauffeur would drive her to school.

    उसके जूते इतने आधुनिक नहीं थे कि कोई उन्हें स्टाइलिश कहे।

    कोई लिमोज़ीन चालक उसे स्कूल ले जाने नहीं आता था।

Her house had no drawing room; only a den.

Her bedtime, poor darling, was quarter past ten!

    उसके घर में ड्रॉइंग रूम नहीं था, बस एक छोटा-सा कमरा था।

    और उसकी सोने का समय, बेचारी की, रात सवा दस बजे था!

    —

Well one day Prince Charming declared that a ball

would be held in his honour and maidens from all

over the kingdom were welcome to come

and party to techno and jungle house drum.

    एक दिन प्रिंस चार्मिंग ने घोषणा की कि उनके सम्मान में एक नृत्य-समारोह होगा,

    और पूरे राज्य की युवतियों को वहाँ आने का निमंत्रण होगा,

    जहाँ वे टेक्नो और जंगल हाउस ड्रम संगीत पर नृत्य कर सकेंगी।

    —

But Poor Cinderella, with nothing to wear,

collapsed in her stepmother’s La-Z-Boy chair.

    पर गरीब सिंड्रेला के पास पहनने के लिये कुछ भी नहीं था,

    और वह अपनी सौतेली माँ की लेज़ी-बॉय कुर्सी पर ढहकर बैठ गयी।

She let out a sigh, with a lump in her throat,

then sniffled and picked up the TV remote.

    उसने एक गहरी साँस छोड़ी, गले में रुकावट-सी महसूस हुई,

    फिर नाक पोंछी और टीवी का रिमोट उठा लिया।

She surfed channel zero to channel one-ten

then went back to zero and started again.

    वह चैनल शून्य से लेकर चैनल एक-सौ-दस तक बदलती रही,

    फिर वापस शून्य पर आयी और फिर से वही क्रम शुरू कर दिया।

She watched music videos, sitcoms and sports,

commercials and talkshows and weather reports.

    उसने संगीत वीडियो देखे, सिटकॉम देखे, खेल देखे,

    विज्ञापन, टॉक शो और मौसम की रिपोर्टें भी देखीं।

    —

But no fairy godmother came to her side

to offer a dress or a carriage to ride.

    पर कोई परी-गॉडमदर उसके पास नहीं आयी,

    न उसने कोई पोशाक दी, न कहीं जाने के लिये गाड़ी।

So Poor Cinderella’s been sitting there since,

while one of her stepsisters married the Prince.

    इसलिये बेचारी सिंड्रेला तब से वहीं बैठी है,

    और उसकी एक सौतेली बहन ने राजकुमार से शादी तक कर ली।

She sits there and sadly complains to the screen,

if only her stepmother wasn’t so mean.

    वह आज भी वहीं बैठकर स्क्रीन से दुःख-भरे स्वर में कहती है—

    “काश मेरी सौतेली माँ इतनी कठोर न होती।”

  • Understanding Subject-Verb Agreement in English Grammar

Understanding Subject-Verb Agreement in English Grammar

Subject-verb agreement is a core principle of English grammar that plays a critical role in ensuring precision and coherence in both written and spoken communication. This principle dictates that the subject of a sentence must correspond with its verb in terms of number (singular or plural). This article will explore the nuances of subject-verb agreement, outlining key rules, exceptions, and strategies for mastering this integral aspect of English grammar.

    Fundamental Rules of Subject-Verb Agreement

    1. Singular Subjects Require Singular Verbs: When the subject of a sentence is singular, the corresponding verb must also be singular.
      • Example: The cat runs swiftly.
    2. Plural Subjects Require Plural Verbs: Similarly, when the subject is plural, the verb must be plural as well.
      • Example: The cats run swiftly.
    3. Compound Subjects: In cases where two subjects are connected by “and,” they generally necessitate a plural verb.
      • Example: Jack and Jill ascend the hill.
    4. Or and Nor Constructions: When subjects are linked by “or” or “nor,” the verb should agree with the nearest subject.
      • Example: Neither the manager nor the employees were present. (Here, “employees” is plural, prompting the use of the verb “were.”)
    5. Indefinite Pronouns: Certain indefinite pronouns, such as “everyone,” “someone,” and “each,” are treated as singular and thus require singular verbs.
      • Example: Everyone is invited to the gathering.

    Special Considerations in Subject-Verb Agreement

    1. Collective Nouns: Collective nouns (e.g., team, group, family) may take either singular or plural verbs depending on whether the group is acting as a unified entity or as individual members.
      • Example: The team wins the championship. (singular)
      • Example: The team are disputing among themselves. (plural)
    2. Fractions and Percentages: When utilizing fractions or percentages, the verb agrees with the noun that follows the fraction or percentage.
      • Example: Half of the cake is gone. (singular)
      • Example: Half of the cookies are missing. (plural)
    3. Titles and Names: Titles of books, films, or other works are regarded as singular, regardless of their apparent plurality.
      • Example: “The Chronicles of Narnia” is a widely acclaimed series.
    4. Quantitative Expressions: Terms such as “some,” “all,” “most,” or “none” can present challenges. The verb form depends on the noun to which the expression refers.
      • Example: All of the cake is gone. (singular)
      • Example: All of the cookies are gone. (plural)

    Common Errors to Avoid

    1. Proximity Errors: A frequent mistake involves matching the verb with the first subject rather than the nearest one. It is essential to ensure that the verb aligns with the closest subject.
      • Incorrect: Neither the teacher nor the students was prepared.
      • Correct: Neither the teacher nor the students were prepared.
    2. Misinterpretation of Collective Nouns: It is crucial to recognize that collective nouns can take singular or plural verbs based on context. Select the appropriate form depending on whether the group acts as a single unit or as individuals.
    3. Incorrect Usage with Indefinite Pronouns: Remember that indefinite pronouns such as “everyone” and “each” take singular verbs.

    Strategies for Mastering Subject-Verb Agreement

    • Engage in Regular Practice: Participate in exercises that emphasize subject-verb agreement. Consistent practice will foster an intuitive understanding of the rules.
    • Read Aloud: Reading your sentences aloud can help identify errors in agreement that may be overlooked during silent reading.
    • Verify Compound Subjects: When using “and,” “or,” or “nor,” promptly identify the subjects involved to ensure correct agreement.
    • Utilize Grammar Checking Tools: Employ technology by using grammar checking software that can assist in identifying subject-verb agreement errors in your writing.

Achieving mastery in subject-verb agreement is essential for effective communication in English. By comprehending the rules and applying them consistently, one can enhance the clarity and professionalism of their writing.
