In a beautiful villa, on the banks of the Medway resided a gentleman whose name was Darnley. The loss of a beloved wife had given a pensive cast to his features, and seriousness to his deportment. Mr. Darnley however was an affable, gentle, benevolent, and humane gentleman. Mr. Darnley’s fortune was sufficiently great to enable him to engage a governess, Nurse Chapman, a worthy creature to whose care he could securely trust his daughters; Emily, Sophia, Amanda, and Eliza.

‘Now, Susan,’ said Sophia, as soon as they entered the garden, ‘this is the only opportunity you may ever have of obliging us. Do let us walk to the village, and then you know you can see your father and mother.’ ‘La, missy!’ replied the girl, ‘why, you know ’tis as much as my place is worth if Nurse Chapman should find out.’ ‘Find it out indeed,’ said Amanda; ‘how do you think she is to find it out? Come, do let us go, there’s a dear good creature.’ ‘Yes, dear, dear Susan, do let us go,’ said Eliza, skipping on before them, ‘and I’ll show you the way, for I walked there last summer with father.’
It was a luckless hour that Susan yielded, and the party soon reached the village. Susan’s mother was delighted at seeing her, and highly honoured by the young ladies’ presence.
‘Oh, sweet, dear creatures!’ said the old woman, ‘I must get something for them to eat after their long walk. My oven is quite hot, and I can bake them a little cake in a quarter of an hour. I’ll milk Jenny in ten minutes.’ The temptation of her hot cake and new milk was not to be withstood, and Susan began taking down some smart china cups from the mantelpiece and carefully dusted them for the young ladies.
Eliza was suddenly attracted by the appearance of a tame lamb, which went up bleating to its mistress with a view of asking its accustomed breakfast. She was so delighted with the beauty of the little animal that she wanted to kiss it and attempted to catch it. But Billy suddenly sprang away and ran towards the high road. Eliza followed it, hoping to catch it.
A woman whose appearance was descriptive of poverty but whose smiling countenance indicated good nature, at that moment happened to climb down from a wagon, and, accosting Eliza in a tone of familiarity, said: “That’s not half such a pretty lamb, miss, as I have got at home. If you care to come, I will give it to you.” “Oh, the pretty creature,” replied Eliza, “how I should like to take it!” “Well, come along with me, miss,” said the woman, “for I only live just here.” “Well, make haste, then,” said Eliza. “Give me your hand, miss,” replied the woman; and let me lift you up.” Then she pushed her into the wagon, and it immediately drove away.
Eliza realized she was being kidnapped when the wagon driver laughed cruelly and said, “Good catch, Peggy.” She cried bitterly and begged the woman to let her go. “Let you go!” replied the woman. “After all the trouble I have taken to kidnap you? My sister needs children to make lace. If you remain quiet, she will treat you well. You will learn to make lace and help her earn money.” “Oh, my sisters! My sisters! Please let me go back to my sisters!” cried the terrified child.
“I’ll find plenty of sisters for you in a few days,” said the cruel woman. They travelled on to London. Eliza continued to weep silently because the woman threatened to beat her if she made the slightest noise. When they reached London, Eliza was taken into a miserable underground room. She was given some bread and butter, told to go to bed, and left alone to mourn her misfortune and regret disobeying her father’s command.
The next morning she was taken to a woman and sold to her. After the deal was done, she was pushed into a little room where nine or ten children were sitting and making lace. She was dressed in a neat brown gown, a clean cap, and a coloured bib and apron. She was instructed that if anyone asked her name, she must say that her name was Biddy Bullen and that she was the niece of the woman who employed her.
Back home, “Miss Eliza! Miss Eliza!” was shouted throughout the village by Susan, her mother, and all the neighbours who had heard of the misfortune. Her sisters ran here and there in great distress, crying, “Eliza, my dear! My darling! If you are hiding anywhere, please answer us!”
At the same time Nurse Chapman left her room and came into the garden to see the children. As soon as she noticed that Eliza was missing, she cried, “Where is my little darling, Miss Eliza?” “Oh, Nurse!” said Sophia, “my sister is lost!” “Lost!” exclaimed the poor old woman. “What have I heard? How shall I ever face my master again?” Susan then related everything that had happened with tears and deep sorrow.
The servants were immediately sent in different directions on horseback to search for Eliza. When Mr. Darnley heard the terrible news, he was overwhelmed with grief. Handbills describing Eliza and offering a reward of five hundred guineas for her safe return were distributed throughout the country. Yet nine long months passed without any news of the missing child.
“Never, never shall I forgive myself,” Sophia would often say, “for having deviated from my dear father’s command!”
One intensely hot afternoon in the month of August, as Eliza and the other children were sitting at work with the door open for fresh air, an elderly gentleman and lady came to the house. They requested Mrs. Bullen to allow them to sit for a while, explaining that their carriage had broken down about a mile away and they had been forced to walk in the scorching heat.
The sight of so many children working industriously pleased the kind-hearted Mrs. Montague very much. She began asking Mrs. Bullen several questions about them. However, the woman’s confused and uneasy replies made Mrs. Montague suspicious.
“They are really lovely children,” she said to Mr. Montague. “Especially that little girl with the mole under her left eye. She is truly beautiful.” Mr. Montague also looked at Eliza with great affection.
“What is your name, my child?” Mr. Montague asked gently. Eliza blushed and looked nervously towards Mrs. Bullen. Mrs. Bullen quickly answered, “Her name is Biddy Bullen, sir. She is my niece. She is very shy whenever strangers speak to her.” She then ordered Eliza to go upstairs immediately.
“You should try to overcome her shyness,” said Mr. Montague, “by encouraging her to answer whenever anyone speaks to her. By answering for her yourself, you only make her more timid. Come here, my little girl,” he continued kindly, “and tell the lady your name.” Encouraged by his gentle manner, Eliza came forward, although Mrs. Bullen tried to prevent her.
“Well,” said Mr. Montague, gently patting her on the cheek, “where did you get that pretty mole under your eye?” “My mother gave it to me, sir,” replied Eliza innocently, “but I never saw her, because Nurse Chapman told me that she went to heaven as soon as I was born.”
“Your mother! And what was your mother’s name?” asked Mr. Montague. “Darnley, sir,” answered the child, forgetting everything that had been taught to her. “Darnley!” exclaimed Mrs. Montague. “Why, this must be the very child whose disappearance has been advertised in the newspapers for the past twelve months. And that mole proves it!”
Mr. Montague immediately tried to seize Mrs. Bullen, but she escaped from his grasp and ran out through the back door. Within a few moments she had disappeared completely.
“Has she really gone?” all the children asked together. When Mr. Montague assured them that she had gone forever, their happiness knew no bounds. Some children laughed, some cried with joy, while others jumped with excitement. It was a deeply moving sight.
Mr. Montague’s carriage soon arrived. A servant was sent to bring a magistrate from Wycombe. Mr. Montague remained there until the magistrate arrived and questioned all the children. The children were placed under his protection. Meanwhile, Mrs. Montague insisted that Eliza should immediately be taken home to her father.
This request was willingly agreed to. By three o’clock the following afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. Montague, together with Eliza, reached Darnley Hall. Nurse Chapman happened to be standing near the window when the carriage stopped. The moment she saw the little girl, she cried out joyfully, “My child! My dear child! My lost Eliza!”
Mr. Darnley, who was reading at that moment, immediately sprang from his seat and hurried to the door in great excitement. Within a moment he returned, holding Eliza tightly in his loving embrace.
The joyful news quickly spread throughout the house. Emily, Sophia, and Amanda rushed eagerly to meet their beloved sister. They embraced one another with tears of happiness, and the entire family rejoiced at Eliza’s safe return.
From that day onward, all the children firmly resolved that they would always obey their father’s instructions and would never again act against his wishes.
Mr. and Mrs. Montague were warmly thanked and affectionately requested to stay as guests at Darnley Hall. Although they were pleased by the invitation, they politely declined because they wished to return to Wycombe and look after the other rescued children. Mr. Montague believed that no duty should ever be left unfinished.
Moral: Children should always obey their parents and elders. Even a small act of disobedience can lead to great danger, while obedience, discipline, and caution ensure safety and happiness.
